This article explains how to import list values into a product by using the Product Designer

In order to import list values you must first create the import file. This file needs to be created

with a specific format:

  • It must be a tab-delimited file
  • Each list value must be on a separate line
  • Each line should have the following data (delimited by tabs): List name, Parent value (if applicable), Sequence number, List value Name, Parameter (if applicable), Price Chart, Price, Cost, Percent, Description.


The easiest way to create an import file is with Microsoft Excel. Put the data in the columns on the

spreadsheet and then save the spreadsheet as a text file (tab delimited).  Below is an example of an Excel spreadsheet setup for a Patterns list.



The following steps will demonstrate how to create and import list values.

Create the Import File

  1. Run Microsoft Excel
  2. Enter your data in the format shown in the above example
  3. Note, if you are adding a list that has a parent, then the parent for each list item will need to be populated.  There is no parent for the Patterns list above; therefore, the Parent field is left blank.
  4. Prior to saving the file, you should delete the first row with the headings.  Only the data should be imported, not the headings.
  5. Choose File, Save as and save the file with a type:  Text (Tab delimited).


Create the List - if you already have the list and are only adding values, you can skip this portion.  If it is a new list, then you need to follow these steps.

  1. Run Product Designer.
  2. Open the product you want to import the data into.
  3. From the View menu click Lists.
  4. Enter a new row, using the name of the List you have created.
  5. If the list has a parent and that parent list isn't already added, enter the name of the parent list on a separate line.
  6. Then go back and add the Parent list to the first list.  See example below for the Colors List with the Parent list of Patterns.
  7. Click off the row so that the pencil goes away and the entry is saved.
  8. Close the Lists window.


Import the file

  1. In Product Designer, click Import from the File menu.
  2. From the list, choose  List Items.
  3. Click the Browse button and select the text file you created.
  4. Click the Import button.
  5. From the View menu click Lists
  6. Double-click on the List name that you have imported to view the data that was imported.
